Great article, thank you! I have always refused to wear gold or gemstones, there is so much suffering and injustice and oppression involved in mining them...thank you for this terrific teaching. It's so wonderful to have a sense of shared values within the Jewish community.

nice work on the environmental implications of mining gold in "all that's gold doesn't glitter." clearly this is not how the cohenim were supposed to obtain their gold (and if it is we should be outraged that G-d would command such destruction for the sake of a glittering metal found in the depths of our earth).
Another implication of mining gold (and diamonds) which is less known, but perhaps even more devastating in terms of human life is the resulting spread of HIV in mining camps in southern Africa. As laborers travel from all over Africa to mozambique, south africa, zimbabwe and other rich mining countries, they spend months away from their families usually living in dormitory like conditions with other men. The sex industry thus prospers and HIV and HSV-2 infections spread and then are brought back to home countries. This is thought to be one epidemiological explanation for the high prevalence in southern african countries and the subsequent spread over time to the rest of subsaharan Africa. see UNAIDS graphs to visually appreciate this phenomenon:

Thus, the purchase of gold and diamonds for our western tastes is at least indirectly responsible for the spread of HIV in Subsaharan Africa.
